In the latest episode of the LTC Heroes podcast, we speak with David Coppins, CEO and Co-Founder at IntelyCare Inc. and Chris Caulfield, Co-Founder and Chief Nursing Officer of the same company. The talk takes place on a cruise to celebrate Nurses Week. There are around 500 people onboard.

IntelyCare is a digital staffing platform with thousands of nurses, nurse assistants, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities signed up. The app matches healthcare professionals with facilities for temporary staffing needs.

Nurses can use the app to find anything from a single shift to a month-long assignment. Client facilities can request a specific type of nurse with certain skill sets. They simply enter their requirements into the platform and they’ll usually have the shift filled within a short period.

IntelyCare has become very successful and now operates in 30 states.

David and Chris attribute their success to coming in as new players in the market. While there are other staffing agencies with good existing client relationships, IntelyCare is proud of the growth of the number of its nurses and of how well-engaged they are with the company.

Rapidfire Q/A

Why are you on a cruise together?

David: Nurses Week traditionally hasn’t been celebrated, I think, in the way that I believe nurses deserve. So we decided this year to blow it all out and invite 500 of our closest nurse friends and go on a big cruise. And provide more of a proper celebration.

What did you think of the idea, Chris? Was there any concern?

Chris: No, no, I thought it was amazing! Nurses don’t get the opportunity to do much and get celebrated that much, particularly at nursing homes.

What is IntelyCare?

David: So, we have developed a digital staffing platform, where we brought together thousands of nurses, nurse assistants, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. And we do matching. We match for temporary staffing.

So our nurses can go into the app and find everything from a single shift to a month-long assignment. And our client facilities can say, I need this specific type of nurse with these skill sets, and they can enter it into the system. Then, usually, we can have that shift filled in a very short period.

It’s been kind of remarkable how successful it’s been. We’re operating in 30 states.

When do you slow down?

David: I think I’m usually telling everybody to go faster. I’m not sure that I’d say we need to slow down. I think that there’s so much that we want to be able to do, both for our nurses and our clients.

And there’s so much potential to try to finally solve the real hardcore staffing issue for clients. And there’s so much potential to let our nurses work in a way they want to work.

I want to double the size of our team and go twice as fast. So I don’t think I’m the right guy to be asking about that.

What does your leadership style look like?

Chris: I think I’m more of a team member than a leader. We have a lot of great leaders in the company. But throughout the company, it’s a fail-fast mentality, meaning that we give our employees and our teams the ability to go out and try something.

You’re not going to get in trouble or lose your job if you’re going out there and trying something to benefit our organization. So it’s enlisted in the whole company, in all the groups, is to go out there and go for it.

We’re not dealing directly with patients in the office. So we don’t have patients’ lives at risk when we’re in the corporate office. So if you’re going to try a new campaign to help out our nurses, or help out staffing, or to help anything throughout the organization, we give the real freedom and flexibility for all of our team members to go out there and try.

And if you fail, we’re just going to get back up, and we’re going to try something else.
