Rapid fire Q/A

What did you do after you start working with your family?

I went to college and started my LTC career with Prestige Care in 1989. I started with a great company and saw great examples of leadership. In 1991, an opportunity came up to work in the family business and I took it.

Did you know you would always be in long-term care?

I always worked as a kid and I loved aviation. So I grew up around the elderly and airplanes. I went to school for engineering, then quit and went to aviation school. I realized I didn’t want to do aviation for a living, so I ended up going back to my LTC roots.

What example taught you that LTC is mission-driven?

My grandfather called my dad to come run a senior living facility in Roseburg, Oregon. My dad told him he knew nothing about running a business. My grandfather told him, “Work hard and be honest. That’s what I need.” So I watched my dad, and his commitment to people and the care of his residents.

Tell me about Mission Senior Living and Dream Flights.

We have nine communities in four states. We focus on smaller communities so people can stay in their hometowns. An example would be our facility in Mesquite, Nevada, which is currently at 100% occupancy.

Why did you decide to put facilities in multiple states?

That’s where my aviation background comes in. We want to stay true to our mission and with my aviation background transportation between facilities is not an issue.

Tell me about your company’s mission statement.

We are blessed to have a very simple one. It is six words that tell you who we are, what we do, and why. Caring people, is who we are. Serving people, is what we’re doing. Improving lives, is why we do it. You can use those six words to make every decision you’ll need to make in senior care.

How does Dream Flights give back to the community?

Nobody thought it would work. We give away flights in a 1940s open-cockpit airplane. We give people in their 80s, 90s, and over 100 a chance to do something they’ve always wanted to do and it unlocks great joy in them. We’ve done almost 6,000 flights.
